Hurricane Rita: Should we stay or should we go?

Today’s the day that we Houstonians are supposed to decide whether to stay or go.

I’m a little worried. I kind of want to leave, but hotels north and northwest of us are already packed with Katrina evacuees and preemptive Rita evacuees. The panickers and naysayers are annoying me and freaking me out.

I remember Hurricane Alicia. It was no big deal. But it was Category 3, and we lived in a brick house, and we didn’t have AC to begin with, anyway. This one’s supposed to be Category 4, I’m in a cheaply made apartment building, and my kids aren’t used to living without power for hours at a time.

The grocery stores are already running out of stuff, and I haven’t stocked up yet. All I wanted were some snacks, extra candles, and maybe extra playing cards.

At work, they just made us pack up all the files that were in the windowed offices and move them to interior rooms. I keep telling these people we should have gone paperless long ago… If only to save me the papercuts, I mean, while I’m having to pack up stuff for the people who are more important than me…

I have the feeling that everything’s going to be okay, and we should just stay home and weather the storm this weekend.

Then again, I’m sure a lot of people in New Orleans had that feeling, too, right before Hurrican Katrina destroyed their city.
