Recent Dreams and Their Translations

I

I dreamed I stole two old ladies’ purses from a bar bathroom. One was sequined, the other beaded. I hopped into a cab to make my getaway, planning to inspect the insides of the purses later. I’d forgotten to tell the cab driver where to go. We ended up in an East side ghetto with which I’m not familiar. I tried to call Tad but my phone was full of urgent text messages from other people. I was worried that the cab driver and my fellow passenger, both older women, would realize that I had stolen the purses. I was nervous, but didn’t regret stealing them.

I think that dream was about the fact that I’m broke lately, and I crave nice clothing and accessories, and I feel guilty about it.

I dreamed I found a litter of kittens. I decided to take care of them. Then more kittens appeared from under the bed. Then more came in from outside. Then more came in from holes in the walls. Kittens, kittens, everywhere. All different colors and meowing.

I always dream this. It just means that I have overwhelming responsibilities.

III

I dreamed I had to pick up my kids from a field trip by the ocean.

When I was married and living in the middle of nowhere with no friends, I used to dream that the ocean appeared suddenly under freeway bridges and at parks. It was full of giant whales and scared the crap out of me.

When I first moved back to Houston with my kids four years ago, I would dream that the ocean was in our back yard. The kids would swim in it and I’d be scared, but I’d pretend not to be for their sake.

Now I dream that they swim in the ocean all the time, and I leisurely drive to pick them up, dry them off, get them home.

I think those dreams are about letting my children live in the world and experience the unknown.
