Popular Emotions
I can’t stand listening to people get angry about “romantic” “reality” shows such as The Bachelorette. “Why did she give that guy a rose??” they bellow. “He was SO GROSS!”
Why do they think that anything that happens on those shows isn’t designed to make them tune in again and again, satisfying the thirst for ratings and therefore ad dollars?
And yet, when I watch Style Court, on the Style Network, it makes me cry. The other day they brought in a woman who looked like Sally Field in Norma Rae, wearing a snake-print polyester blouse and the saddest, flattest over-auburned hair. She ended up looking like Sally Field at a corporate meeting, in a really sweet suit. I know the people on that show are real, because I see them every day in real life. Sometimes, when the makeover comes out particularly well, I can’t help crying. I cry tears of joy in compassion for my fellow man.
