Meanwhile, back at the fortune teller’s…

Simon took me back to see the palm reader. This time, though, I got her daughter.

For twenty bucks, she looked at my palm and spewed clichés at me for five minutes.

However, she did say one important thing: “I see in your destiny three children.”

“Really?” I said. “Are you sure? Look close.”

Last time, two years ago, her mom had told me three boys and a girl. I already have three boys. The girl had me worried.

“Yes. Three children,” she said, searching my expression for clues as to what else she should say.

But that was all I needed to know. Simon dropped the twenty on the ashtray-strewn table and we left.

“I kind of wanted to say something,” he said in the car. “You know, like [adopting a countrified voice], ‘Ask her about the doctor, baby! Ask her about the doctor!’”

I laughed. “You should have.”

But, instead, we went on into the night, where house music and Jello shots turned out to be our immediate destiny.
