Yesterday was my son’s first appointment with the new pediatrician. A little stressful because he needed to be screened for a bone condition called Perthes, and because of our situation. Our situation is that for the past year 1/2 instead of a regular doctor we have been going to urgent care whenever a problem arose. Insurance troubles and whatnot. Of course at the doctor’s office where in their words “we dont schedule exams to establish routine care, you just call and get an appointment if their sick or need to be seen” we still had to face the stigma of not having had a regular care doctor for the past year. Insurance companies make so much sense. We also had to face the stigma of being a homeschooling family. The doctor was fairly nonchalant about it but still there’s an aura of making sure the kids being taken care of properly because he homeschools. So in this environment my son and I are being questioned by the doctor about the basics, plus. When she found out we dont do dairy she asked him what he eats. My son’s exact words were “chicken, sugar, bread with sugar, drinks with sugar, sugar, sugar and more sugar” he was smiling gleefully while he said this. While no doubt visions of sugarplum fairies danced through his head. As I slid under my chair I realized that it was my own food commentary backfiring on me. When he asks for a jam sandwich I say “honey that’s just bread with sugar”, when he wants a juice cocktail or even apple juice I say “that’s just like sugar water”, I only allow pop-tarts for desert not breakfast because they’re just like candy. Now I have to revise my whole nutrition jargon for the home. On top of everything I bought him a large chocolate dipped ice cream cone on the way home. Because even a 9 year old boy who embarasses you like that deserves ice cream for getting his testicles squeezed by a brand new doc. I’m glad I’m not a 9 year old boy.
