Three ruby-slipper clicks later…

We’re home, the apartment is fine, the power’s on. It’s not even raining. One of the tall conifers by the pool is leaning at a 50 degree angle now, but that’s it.

My friend Dot is fine – she stayed in Missouri after all, thank goodness. Hopefully their place didn’t get damaged.

We packed in a hurry to give Tad’s sister her home and privacy again. The power only went out for short bursts, three or four times yesterday and today. No biggie. No computers blown out. Surge protectors all around, hooray. We peeled out home before the reversed gridlock could start. I’m glad we did, because traffic was awesome. And no one was stranded anywhere, either. Good job, Fort Hood peeps.

All in all, I think everyone did as well as could have been expected. I know people are gonna bitch and whine and sue the government, but really, how could anyone have made the evacuation better, unless we all quit our jobs a week in advance? Good drill, Houston. Next time we know: We’ll need more gas.

The news was confusing this morning. It seemed like anchors were out trying to find damage to show. Some flooding in Beaumont, it looked like, plus of course New Orleans got flooded again. Those poor people.

Next time the media should know, too: Try not to freak everyone the fuck out unless it’s absolutely necessary. Whose idea was it to record those “Hurricane Rita: The Fifth Worst Storm in HISTORY!” end caps? Jesus. Next time, let’s have more science and less drama, shall we? Because, man, if a real hurricane comes, why the hell would anyone heed the warnings to evacuate? The news is gonna have to interview God or Mother Nature and have them tell us personally to leave, right?

Now we’re hungry for something besides canned goods, and no restaurants are open. I’m calling around… Tad says check the Asian places first. But no luck yet.

I’m hungry. The kids already ate soup and canned chili. I guess I have to eat sardines or low-carb peanut butter on generic white bread, which was all that Kroger had left the other day.
