I am a saloon girl.

In red satin. With black lace. And a red and black feather boa. And red feathers and sequins in my hair. And black fishnet hose. And red lipstick. And black eyelashes.

But I don’t yet know what kind of shoes.

The costume store was crowded and sweaty, but our long struggle inside there was worth it.

My children are violent things.

Twelve-year-old Josh is a Ring Wraith with a mace.

Ten-year-old Dallas is a skeleton with a scythe.

Seven-year-old Rory is Neo. With a custom-made pleather trenchcoat and fly-eye mirrored shades.

My children always get to be what they want for Halloween. That’s what Halloween is for.
