Jack Higgins confuses me with his animated opinions.
Someone just emailed me this editorial cartoon. As you can see, Panel One seems to refer to recently reported torture of Iraqi prisoners. It shows a guy watching the news with his kids, wondering what could be worse than being stripped, tortured, beaten, etc. Panel Two shows a plane flying towards the guy’s window.
I don’t get it.
Is this cartoon saying that the torture of the Iraqi prisoners is somehow suitable retribution for Osama Bin Laden’s attack on the World Trade Center?
Or is it saying that, since America underwent the the tragedy of 9/11, our soldiers are justified in torturing anyone who sort of looks like Osama Bin Laden? A crime of passion, maybe?
Or is it just saying that the death of many is worse than the torture of a few?
If it’s only saying the latter, then why did Higgins bother? A lot of things are worse than a few people being tortured for a few days. But that’s not a point I’d expect to see made in the editorial section.
