I finally paid off, last month, all my credit card debt. Because it had dragged on so long and the collection agency was willing to settle, I managed to get away with paying only $200 worth of interest and fees on the $750 worth of clothing and gifts I’d bought my husband-at-the-time. Otherwise, I’d have had to pay $1200 in fees in interest. That’s for 2 years of not spending anything on the card at all and only paying the minimum required while I went from being a destitute single mom of three to the fabulously lower-middle-class single mom of three I am now. I am never getting a credit card again. Debit, baby. It’s all about the money in the bank.
Now all I have to pay for is the $16,000 I owe on student loans, $8,000 of which is interest and fees. “But, Gwen… you keep bragging that you had a scholarship!” the little girl in the front with the blue dress says. Well, yes I did. But I took out the $8,000 worth of loans to buy clothes and a baby crib, to help float the rent, and – oh, yeah – to pay off my then-husband’s big red shiny Ford F150 truck.
He had to pay off his truck, didn’t he? Paying it off with a lower-interest student loan would save us money, wouldn’t it? He promised he’d pay it back, didn’t he? C’mon, Gwen. C’mon! Just pay off the truck so we can trade it for a motorcycle and then trade the motorcycle for a boat! All you have to do is stay married for 10 years, and then you’ll be free to pay off the interest and fees on $16,000 at $200 a month for the rest of your life while I ride around in the boat and you ride around looking for parts for your piece of shit car! C’mon! Just do it! It’ll be fun!!!
My advice to you: Don’t get credit cards. Don’t get married without your own money and a pre-nup. Don’t waste your scholarship or student loan money. In short, don’t be as stupid as I was at 18, which is as stupid as most people are at 18.
